Madeline Bell (Brodus)
Madeline Bell, born Madeline Bell Brodus on July 23, 1942, in Newark, New Jersey, is a renowned American soul singer, blessed with a pliable and highly expressive voice.
Raised by her grandmother, who nurtured her singing talent from a young age, Madeline began performing gospel music in church at just five years old. By the age of fourteen, she was a standout member of her local gospel choir and later joined the gospel group The Glovertones, touring across New Jersey and New York.
In the early 1960s, Madeline's career took a significant turn when she became part of the Alex Bradford Singers, performing in the acclaimed off-Broadway production of Black Nativity. This experience led her to the UK, where she was signed by Columbia Records and launched a successful solo career. Notable for her powerful vocals, she recorded hits such as "What The World Needs Now Is Love" and provided backing vocals for legendary artists including Dusty Springfield and Elton John.
Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Madeline continued to perform, both as a solo artist and in collaborations with various musicians. She gained further recognition as a member of the pop group Blue Mink. With that band she enjoyed international success with hits like
"The Banner Man" and "Melting Pot".
Madeline Bell possesses a remarkably versatile voice, adept at adapting to various musical styles and genres. Her singing is characterized by a clear and earthy quality, which, while not overpowering, resonates with a unique warmth that captivates listeners.
Overall, Madeline Bell's vocal prowess reflects her extensive experience in music, showcasing her talent as a highly expressive artist capable of leaving a lasting impression through her performances.
After decades in London Madeline moved to the south of Spain, Estepona to be exact, where indeed she enjoys the sun. She still performs all over Europe to share her over 65 years of professional soulful experience with her fans.
Madeline recorded 4 albums on the Baileo Music Productions label: ‘Melting Pot’, ‘Blessed’, ‘Blue Christmas’ and ‘Soulmates'. A true to life saying by Madeline is: "Maybe I could have been more famous, but my ego is nog big enough".
Bill BuckleyMadeline Bell, of course, needs no introduction here. She was – indeed, still is an incomparable soul and jazz vocal stylist who has never quite achieved the major status her talent deserves.
