The American music industry continues to triumph, maintaining dynamic growth for the eighth consecutive year. Statistical data published by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for 2023 indicate another record period, showcasing continuous development and innovation in the music sector.
Revenue Growth from Music
According to the RIAA report, recorded music revenues in the USA in 2023 increased by 8%, reaching a record amount of $17.1 billion in estimated retail value. The largest driver of growth was the streaming service, which saw record levels of engagement in paid subscriptions and continued growth in advertising revenues.
Streaming Dominance
Streaming services continued to dominate the landscape of recorded music revenues in 2023. Paid subscriptions, ad-supported services, digital radio, and social media platforms generated a total revenue of $14.4 billion, accounting for 84% of total recorded music revenues. Paid subscriptions increased by 9%, reaching $11.2 billion, making up 78% of streaming revenues.
Evolution of Digital Downloads
Revenues from digital music downloads continued to decline in 2023, reaching $434 million, a decrease of 12%. Digital downloads accounted for just 3% of recorded music revenues in the USA, a significant drop compared to their peak share in 2012.
Growth of Physical Products
Despite the dominance of streaming, physical music formats continued to see growth following their significant resurgence in 2021. Total revenues from physical products amounted to $1.9 billion, an increase of 11% compared to the previous year. Notably, revenues from vinyl records grew by 10% to $1.4 billion, accounting for 71% of physical format revenues.
Summary
The year 2023 was another record year for the American music industry, with a strong emphasis on streaming and physical music formats. Despite the decline in digital music downloads, overall revenues increased, reflecting the dynamic transformations and consumer preferences in music consumption. The industry is expected to continue evolving, adapting to changing trends and technologies in the coming years.
